β€œEach and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life.”
β€” Pope St. Paul VI, Humanae Vitae, Β§11

What is this method?

It's a natural method of observing and recording the biological markers of a woman's cycle β€” a form of Natural Family Planning fully in keeping with Catholic teaching. It's purely observational β€” no devices, no temperature-taking, no internal exams β€” and it can be used both to achieve and to avoid pregnancy, as well as to monitor health.

πŸ”¬

Standardized observation

Each day you note the most fertile sign you observed β€” bleeding or cervical mucus β€” using a precise, validated vocabulary so your chart means the same thing to you and to a trained practitioner.

🌿

Natural & non-invasive

Observations are made externally while using the restroom. There's nothing to wear, insert, or measure β€” just your own body's signs, recorded once at the end of each day.

πŸ’‘

For planning & health

Couples use it to identify the fertile window β€” to conceive or to space pregnancies. Doctors use the same chart to spot and treat underlying health issues.

How charting works

  1. 1

    Observe

Each time you use the restroom, observe the sensation as you wipe and look at any discharge on the tissue. Pay attention to whether it feels dry, damp, or lubricative, and whether mucus is cloudy, clear, or stretchy.

  2. 2

    Record

At the end of the day, record the most fertile sign you saw. Vita Nova turns your selections into a short standardized code β€” for example 8KLx2 (tacky, clear, lubricative, seen twice).

  3. 3

    Interpret

A colored sticker is placed on each day automatically: red for bleeding, green for dry days, and a white baby sticker for the fertile days when conception is possible.

  4. 4

    Find your Peak

The Peak Day is the last day of clear, stretchy, or lubricative mucus. Mark it and Vita Nova counts the three days after it β€” the close of your fertile window.

Health benefits

Your chart is more than a planning tool β€” it's a window into your overall health. Because it tracks real biological markers cycle after cycle, patterns in your chart can reveal underlying conditions and help your doctor treat the cause, not just the symptoms.

🩺
Identify health issues

Irregular bleeding, unusual mucus patterns, and short cycles can flag hormonal imbalances, PCOS, endometriosis, or thyroid problems.

🀰
Achieve pregnancy

Knowing your most fertile days greatly improves the chances of conceiving β€” and helps couples facing infertility find answers.

πŸ—“οΈ
Space pregnancies naturally

Used correctly to avoid pregnancy, the method is highly effective β€” with no drugs, hormones, or side effects.

πŸ’—
Body literacy

Charting builds a deep, lasting understanding of your own cycle and what is normal for you.

πŸ”
Track treatment

When working with a doctor, your chart shows whether a treatment is actually restoring a healthy cycle.

πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ
Peace of mind

A clear, daily record replaces guesswork with confidence β€” for you and your partner together.

The rules, in plain language

Vita Nova follows standardized natural-charting conventions. Here's the key.

The stickers

Red β€” a day of menstrual bleeding.
Green β€” a dry day. A time of infertility.
πŸ‘ΆWhite baby β€” mucus is present. A potentially fertile day; conception is possible.
πŸ‘ΆGreen baby β€” a dry post-Peak count day (1Β·2Β·3): dry-looking, but still counted as fertile.
Yellow β€” used in special situations (breastfeeding, pre-menopause) under a practitioner's guidance.
PPeak & count β€” Peak Day, then 1Β·2Β·3. These four days are always fertile.

The VDRS code β€” what it means

VDRS is the Vaginal Discharge Recording System. Every observation becomes a short code: a category number, optional descriptor letters, and a frequency.
